Choosing the Best Types of Wine to Serve at Your Wedding

If you are having a wine bar at your wedding, you will want to ensure that you have an adequate selection that will appeal to your guests.  That means having enough to supply the thirst of those individuals, as well as having the right variety to suit their tastes.  Of course, you are never going to please everyone, but if you keep the following factors in mind as you choose the wine that you will serve, you will likely find that the wine bar is a big success.

Taste Test Ahead of Time Before you buy, be sure that you taste the varieties that you are considering.  If you aren’t much of a wine connoisseur, then ask your friends or family members to come over for a wine and cheese party.  That way, you can get various opinions on the bottles that you had been considering.  Ask others to bring a bottle of their favorite wines as well, so you can get an idea of what varieties the guests may like.

Consider the Foods to be Served Be sure to consider the meal that you will be serving as well.  There is a lot to be said about matching foods and wines.  Varying the foods will make the same glass of wine taste completely different, so it is worthwhile to consult food and wine guides when choosing which you will serve in conjunction with your wedding reception meal.

Always Provide a Variety While matching the meal is a good idea, you can’t narrow your list too much, as everyone has a different preference when it comes to wine.  At the very least, you should have a red, a white, and a rose.  However, we generally recommend, at a wine bar, that you include two whites and two reds, one dry and one sweet in each color.

Go With the Classics If you are not accustomed to choosing wines, you’re your best bet is to select the most common varieties of wine, such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel.  Look at local restaurant menus and reference their top sellers, when selecting particular brands.  This will give a good indication of what local audiences prefer.

Price Shop Very often there are deals to be had when buying in bulk, so shop wisely.  Ask various suppliers for price quotes.  Before you can do that, though, you must compile a list of the types of wine that you hope to have at your wedding, along with the desired number of bottles.
